Utopia: Is It Humanly Possible?

Western civilization has a propensity for Utopia. This was expressed in the Hellenistic desire to describe the ideal Polis and the Christian search for Heaven on Earth.

Beyond Today -- Utopia: Is It Humanly Possible?

It is natural that in any age of revolutions and major social upheaval, utopias rapidly gained significance. Engels distinguished between utopian and scientific socialism Engels, [] Historians of economic thought and methodologists have long criticized the said clear-cut separation between scientific argumentation and literary discourse Samuels ed. It is thus safer to consider that any theory can become utopian in a certain context and to a certain extent, whereas conversely a utopia can have scientific significance.

According to this perspective, one could even proceed in the reverse order to re-examine economic texts as particular expressions of the literary genre of utopias. Such a view of economic thinking, to which I subscribe, erases the nominal border between genres and leads to examine economic utopias in tune with other types of economic texts on similar subjects.

It is especially important to re-examine the utopias which accompanied periods of drastic change, and revolutions. The utopias of late Imperial and early Soviet Russia are of particular interest. The preconditions and implications of the ideal organization of social order and technical progress are central to these utopias.

Kerblay and R. His studies on family labour farms, cooperation and agrarian reforms are still relevant for the countries where most of the population lives in sparsely populated rural areas.

His academic career was mainly linked to the Timiriyazev Academy, despite the fact that his world view and academic interests were highly influenced by his studies in Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany and England. Chayanov sympathized with the February Revolution, which failed to stop his acceptance of bolshevism.
